Upcoming Sunday School Ministry for Fall 2011

Starting September 2011 our normal Sunday School class schedule will resume.

Sparks: Creation

(Ages 9 months – 2 years)

Children in our youngest age group attend the Sparks Sunday School class. With a curriculum based on the Early Christian Awareness program, the children learn about God’s creation through repetitive songs, stories, prayers and props.

Sparks begins and ends in our nursery. Children are taken next door to Room 16 for Sunday School class.

Preschool: Introduction to Godly Play

(Ages 3 and 4)

Children in this age group are introduced to the important Bible stories of our faith through Godly Play.  They are also given lots of time to reflect on what they are learning through free play time.  Simple crafts, songs and games supplement the Godly Play curriculum.

The preschool class meets in our Education Wing in Room 18.

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade: Godly Play

Our early elementary children are invited into a safe and worshipful environment to experience the stories of scripture in a way that encourages them to wonder about themselves, God and the world around them in a way that is playful and meaningful to them. Based on the Montessori teaching method, Godly Play encourages children to use their curiosity and imagination to experience the mystery and joy of God.

Kindergarten meets in the Family Life Center (Room B), while the 1st and 2nd grade class meet in Room 7 behind the sanctuary.

3rd Grade: Bible Explorers

Third Grade students receive Bibles as gifts from the congregation at the beginning of the year. They spend the next nine months learning how to use their Bibles as they go through each section.

The third graders meet in Room 3 across from Ms. Kim’s office.

4th – 5th Grade: The Way of the Child

The Way of the Child offers our older elementary students a calming, centering, meditation style to learning which deepens a child’s connection to God. As they explore and respond to foundational Bible stories, they learn different ways to pray and how to listen for God’s guidance through the Holy Spirit.

The Way of the Child class meets upstairs in the Education Wing in Room 30.

Curriculum

Sparks (Age 9 months – 2 years)

Based on the Early Christian Awareness Program, this curriculum introduces toddlers to the wonders of God’s creation through repetitive music, multi-sensory props and prayer.

 Preschool (Age 3 – Pre-K 5 years)

Preschool children are introduced to the foundational stories of the Old and New Testament, using fun, hands-on learning opportunities, songs, interactive storytelling, and large group games.

Godly Play (Kindergarten – 2nd Grade)

Our young elementary students are invited into an atmosphere of worship to experience the mystery and joy of God.  Godly Play values process, openness and personal discovery, as they become active learners of the Christian language of parables, sacred stories, reflective silence and liturgical action.

Bible Explorers (3rd Grade)

In mid-September, third grade students receive a Bible as a gift from the congregation.  Through Sunday School, they embark on a year-long journey to explore and learn to use their Bibles.

The Way of the Child (4th – 5th Grade)

As they approach the tween years, these older elementary students are offered a calming, centering approach to learning the Bible.  The focus is on deepening their personal connection to God through various types of prayer, meditation and journaling.
