Akins is one of the largest high schools in the Austin area and has a number of low income and unhoused students. Just managing day to day is a feat for these students.
Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, and working with the school counselor, the Missions Team helps in many ways with the individual needs and expenses of these students. In addition to keeping snacks available throughout the school year (also with the help of the WOW group), many needs were identified. For example, MUMC was able to help with payments for a student's participation on an athletics team, a senior trip, band funds, a drawing class, prom tickets, clothing items also including a graduation stole, new backpacks and a refurbished laptop.
This year, Akins has 6 unhoused graduating seniors who will be attending college. Again, with the help of generous MUMC donors, depending on each individual students' needs, we were able to buy graduation gifts such as towels, bedding/sheets, pots/pans/kitchen items, school supplies/backpacks and gift cards, helping each student to make a smooth transition to college. These gifts will be presented at their senior breakfast in early May.
From the Akins counselor: "It has been so amazing to get to provide the opportunity for students to have experiences they wouldn't otherwise! They are always really excited and grateful". Because of your support, MUMC will continue to make an impact in helping these students.
Thank you, Missions Team
