The Prayer of Examen is a spiritual practice introduced by Ignatius of Layola (1491-1556 CE) that invites deep inward reflection on each day as an exercise in noticing the movement of God, our connection to God throughout the day, and learning to discern the will of God. As we examine each day, we look for those moments when we felt close to God, which Ignatius describes as consolation. We then look for those moments in which we felt disconnected from God, defined by Ignatius as desolation. In both spaces we can seek God and hear from God about God’s will for us, the truth about who we are, and be reminded that we are ever held by a good and loving God.

Practicing the Examen:

God with Us: Begin by taking deep breaths, relaxing into your body and settling into the quiet. Be aware of God’s loving presence with you. Invite the Holy Spirit as your companion as you review the day in your mind, paying attention to moments of heightened emotion: joy, confusion, sadness, anger, or peace.

Gratitude: When did you feel closest to God today? Where did you see God at work? What brought you the most joy? Allow yourself to feel God's love for you and give thanks for these moments of your day.

Growth: When did you feel disconnected or furthest from God today?  What moments brought you sadness, anger, loneliness? Is there something you need to confess? Is there someone you need to forgive? Let the Holy Spirit gently comfort, convict or guide you as you pray about these moments.

Hope: What does tomorrow look like? What are you excited about? Worried about? Where do you expect challenges or obstacles? Who might you see? Where do you need God’s guidance, comfort, or peace? Who might you need to pray for? As you look forward to what's next, invite God to be with you, opening you to opportunities to share God's love in the world.

The Examen has become my daily prayer practice and has made such a difference in my spiritual life. I hope that you will find it meaningful in yours as well.

During this season of Lent, we invite you to join us for Morning Prayer Time on Wednesday mornings from 6-8 am. This is an opportunity for contemplative meditation and intercessory prayer, with a structured devotional and opportunity for healing prayer each Wednesday from 6:30-7 am. (Please plan to enter in the East door.)
