Worshipping with Children

A few times a year I get asked by parents or other congregation members why we have children in "adult" worship instead of offering a separate "children's church." It's a choice that we make based on our desire to include children in every part of the life of the church - including worship.

Intergenerational worship supports spiritual growth for all ages. Young children learn what worship is, how to behave in church and what is expected when they are surrounded by older people in worship, especially their parents who hold the most influence over children's lives.

Likewise, adults can also learn from being with and watching children in worship. Jesus himself said that we must be like children in order to enter the kingdom of heaven!

While young children do not always understand all of the words in a sermon or abstract elements of worship, they do learn important things. They learn that they are part of the body of Christ. When we all share in communion or stand up to sing or hear the gospel read or pray out loud together, they learn that they are included in God's family.

Being included in intergenerational worship, they also learn that giving our time, attention, and adoration to God is important. Part of our response to God's goodness and provision is giving our worship and praise back to God. Worship also helps children learn the rhythms of the church year and participate in liturgies that help people of all ages draw closer to God. Even if they can't articulate it, children can sense the presence of the Holy Spirit in a room full of worshiping people!

Children often pay attention and pick up on more than you think. Even while coloring or playing with fidget toys, children can still hear words, phrases, stories, and songs that can help them grow in their faith and understanding of God. Studies show that children can often listen better when their hands and eyes are busy. Worship services that engage the senses and include different learning styles help children to engage.

While we do include children in worship, we also offer many other ways for children to learn at their age level. Sunday School for all ages is offered 10:10 - 11:00 am for all ages to build community and learn together in developmentally appropriate ways!
